about the artist:
Bay Area based painter and printmaker, Cynthia Cao, creates work that captures the passage of time. Originally a photographer, Cao uses the images taken of daily life as a starting point to her work. She paints the same image over and over, pulling certain elements and colors from the previous work to inform the next. Her intent is to investigate the nature of memory over time by manipulation of shapes and textures. As a printmaker, she uses the medium to explore repetition until a final image is created.
She earned her BFA with Honors in Pictorial Arts with a Minor in Art History and Visual Culture from San José State University. Her work has been exhibited at San José City Hall; Kala Art Institute (Berkeley, CA); San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art; Firehouse Gallery (Baton Rouge, LA); CSU Firenze (Florence, Italy); the CSU Chancellor’s Office; among others.
